Kia reveals future powertrains at Geneva Motor Show

Monday, 4 March 2013

  • New three- & four-cylinder Turbo-GDi units, from 999 cc to 1,998 cc
  • 204 ps and 245 ps from latest Gamma 1.6 and Theta-ll 2.0 engines
  • Kia's first Kappa series 1.0-litre 100 ps and 120 ps engines

A special powertrains display on the Kia stand at the 83rd Salon International de l'Automobile in Geneva will preview four new turbocharged GDi (Gasoline Direct Injection) engines which are currently being developed in Korea for use in future models.

The engines embrace the growing automotive industry trend towards smaller capacity, higher efficiency units that consume less fuel and emit fewer emissions - while still delivering responsive performance.

Depending on the engine, innovative features shared by the quartet will include: DCVVT (dual continuously variable valve timing - for both intake and exhaust systems), high pressure direct injection (up to 200 bar through a six-hole injector), exhaust-manifold integrated low-inertia single-scroll or twin-scroll turbochargers, an air-guided inter cooler (with innovative ducting which doubles air flow and improves cooling performance), a separated wall exhaust manifold which reduces exhaust back pressure, enhanced oil injection to decrease piston temperature for improved durability, and tumble-enhanced intake ports for more efficient combustion.

Kia's powertrain display features a three-cylinder turbocharged Kappa 1.0 T-GDi unit that develops either 100 ps or 120 ps - the same as the current four-cylinder unit and a delivers 10-to-15 per cent fuel efficiency improvement.  The new Kappa 1.2 T-GDi is a four cylinder turbocharged 1,248 cc unit which promises a similar performance to current 1.6-litre units.

Moving up the new T-GDi line-up, the Gamma 1.6 T-GDi has four cylinders.  It is a 1,591 cc turbocharged unit that generates 204 ps and 265 Nm of torque.  Offering the prospect of sensational performance, the new Theta-ll, 2.0 T-GDi, a turbocharged four cylinder engine, has a capacity of 1,998 cc and produces up to 245 ps.
