Kia Motors achieved record European sales during the first four months of 2017, according to the latest data released by ACEA (European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association).

Kia’s record 166,266 registrations between 1 January and 30 April represent s 11.7 per cent year-on-year growth, outpacing the wider European market, which expanded 4.5 per cent during the same period. The latest sales data gives Kia a 3 per cent cumulative share of the European market for the first time, up from 2.8 per cent during the same four-month period in 2016. Kia captured 3.4 per cent of European market share in April, with 41,279 units sold.

March also saw the company establish a new single-month sales record, with 55,007 new cars registered, while January-to-March represented Kia’s best-ever sales quarter in Europe, with 124,987 units registered (+13 per cent year-on-year).

Michael Cole, Chief Operating Officer of Kia Motors Europe, commented: “The launch of a range of new vehicles has provided the impetus for our record sales so far this year. In particular, we have expanded our eco car line-up, enabling Kia to meet growing European demand for advanced powertrain technology.”

Cole added: “Further introductions to the Kia range this year include the all-new Rio, which went on sale during the first quarter of 2017. Throughout the rest of the year, Kia will also introduce a wider variety of eco-friendly vehicles and powertrains, as well as all-new models such as the Picanto city car and our flagship gran turismo, the Stinger.”

Compact cars and electrified powertrains drive new growth

Two key recent areas of growth for Kia have continued to gather pace over the last four months, with a renewed compact car line-up and a range of new hybrid and electric vehicles driving the majority of registrations for the company.

The all-new Rio – launched at the very start of this year – has become an immediate hit with thousands of European buyers. Rio sales have grown 22 per cent year-on-year, with 28,025 units sold year-to-date, up from 22,964 units in 2016. The Picanto has also performed strongly, with sales of the A-segment car growing 23.4 per cent  year-on-year to 22,443 units (a combination of the outgoing and latest models). Kia’s all-new Picanto went on sale across Europe in March.

Alternatively-fuelled vehicles were the biggest single area of growth for Kia up to April. Year-on-year, sales of hybrid and electric Kia cars were more than nine times higher during the first four months of 2017, boosted by the arrival of the new Niro hybrid crossover (10,339 units) and the Optima Plug-in Hybrid (307 units), and growing sales of the Soul EV (1,487 units). A model without a predecessor, the Niro in particular has proven popular – during the last four months it has become Kia’s fifth best-selling model in Europe, behind the Picanto, Rio, Sportage and cee’d model family.

The Niro and Optima ranges are expanding further in 2017, with the impending introduction of a Niro Plug-in Hybrid, and the roll-out of the Optima saloon’s plug-in hybrid powertrain to the popular Optima Sportswagon derivative. These latest models ensure Kia remains on target to achieve its global aim for 2020 – to improve fuel efficiency by 25 per cent compared with 2014 levels.
